Anthony Newcombe Discusses New Ideas in Mental Health with Adelaide PHN Staff

Rsearch Interest Group

Expert psychiatrist and mental health advocate Anthony Newcombe recently spoke with Adelaide PHN staff during a Primary Health Research Interest Group (PHRIG) Lunchbox Session. With over 30 years of experience, Newcombe is recognised for his work in shaping mental health care through mentorship, supervision, and policy development.

Anthony introduced the idea of moving from the traditional pathogenic model—which focuses on diagnosing and treating illness—to a salutogenic approach, which emphasises promoting health and well-being. This shift encouraged Adelaide PHN staff to think beyond pathology and explore how overall mental health can be supported in practice.

The discussion sparked conversations on how these ideas could impact patient outcomes and the future direction of mental health care. Staff were able to gain valuable insights and reflect on how this new approach could be applied in their work.

Anthony’s participation highlights Adelaide PHN’s commitment to fostering innovation and building research capacity within the primary care community.
