Changes to the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) items relating to Long-Acting Reversible Contraceptive (LARC) services
What’s Changing?
From 1 November 2025, MBS items for long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARC), including Mirena and Implanon are getting a boost to make these services more affordable.
These changes form part of the Strengthening Medicare Women’s Health Package, aimed at improving access to contraception and reproductive health care across Australia.
Fee Increases for Existing Items
The following MBS items for LARC insertion and removal have had their fees increased:
- 35503 – IUD insertion - Item 35503 | Medicare Benefits Schedule
- 35506 – IUD removal under general anaesthetic Item 35506 | Medicare Benefits Schedule
- 14206 – Hormonal implant insertion Item 14206 | Medicare Benefits Schedule
- 30062 – Hormonal implant removal Item 30062 | Medicare Benefits Schedule
New Loading Item Introduced
- MBS item 35501 provides a 40% loading on the fee of the relevant LARC item when all associated services (including consultations) are bulk billed. Note TN.0.1 | Medicare Benefits Schedule
- This aims to incentivise providers to bulk bill LARC services, making them more affordable for patients.
Descriptor Updates
- 35503 and 35506 now reference the new loading item 35501.
- 30062 has been amended to remove the phrase “as an independent procedure”.
