Endometriosis Awareness Month 2025

Thrive

March 2025 marks Endometriosis Awareness Month, an opportunity to raise awareness of this often misunderstood condition that affects at least one in nine individuals assigned female at birth in Australia.

Endometriosis is a complex and debilitating chronic condition that can be difficult to diagnose, with those suffering waiting an average of six to eight years before diagnosis. It can start at puberty and continue through to older age with significant impacts on quality of life. Symptoms may include severe pelvic pain, lower back and abdominal pain, fatigue and bladder/bowel problems.

Access to early diagnosis and management is important to reduce long-term health and social impacts. The delay in diagnosis is largely due to societal norms around menstrual health, which leads to symptoms being normalised and dismissed, even sometimes by healthcare providers when consumers seek medical help.

Endometriosis & Pelvic Pain Clinics

The Australian Government is funding Endometriosis and Pelvic Pain GP Clinics to improve access to timely diagnosis and dedicated multidisciplinary care for people experiencing endometriosis and pelvic pain. Thrive Family Practice delivers the Endometriosis and Pelvic Pain GP Clinic for the Adelaide region, providing access to specialised care and management pathways, with transition of ongoing care to usual primary care providers. Further information and resources can be accessed online.

Expansion of Endometriosis & Pelvic Pain Clinics

On 9 February 2025, the Australian Government announced an expansion of the Endometriosis & Pelvic Pain Clinics initiative, increasing access to specialist care and resources for those affected. Over the next three years (2025-26 to 2027-28), 11 new clinics will be funded, bringing the total to 33 clinics nationally. Additionally, the existing 22 clinics will receive extended funding to continue providing care and support. Read the full details via the media press release.
