Older Australians living with chronic health conditions are being invited to take part in a research trial that aims to improve support for those experiencing loneliness or social isolation. The study offers a free online program designed to help participants better manage the emotional and practical challenges that can accompany long-term physical health conditions.

The program has been developed to teach practical skills for coping with the impacts of chronic illness, including its effects on emotional wellbeing and day-to-day functioning. Researchers are investigating the most effective ways to support older adults who may feel isolated while managing ongoing health concerns.

Participants in the program will receive:

  • Five online lessons delivered over an eight-week period.
  • Practical exercises to help reinforce learning and develop new coping skills.
  • Access to a range of additional resources that have been found helpful by people living with chronic health conditions.
  • The option to receive support from a registered psychologist throughout the course.

To be eligible, participants must:

  • Be aged 60 years or older.
  • Have a diagnosed chronic physical health condition.
  • Experience feelings of loneliness or social isolation.
  • Speak English.
  • Live in Australia.

The research has been approved by the Macquarie University Human Research Ethics Committee. Individuals interested in learning more or participating can contact the research team at ageingwisely@mq.edu.au or visit www.eCentreClinic.org

This free initiative offers an opportunity for older Australians to gain valuable self-management skills, access professional support, and contribute to research that could help improve services for others living with chronic illness and social isolation.
