GP resources - Supporting Pregnant Women to Stop Smoking: E-learning 

This training module has recently been approved by the RACGP and accredited by ACRRM as a CPD activity. GPs can complete this training and obtain 1 CPD hour of Educational Activities, an optional 0.5 hours of Measuring Outcomes, and an optional 0.5 hours of Reviewing Performance.  
The module includes the health impacts of smoking in pregnancy, and how to provide fast, simple and effective brief advice in a supportive, non-judgemental manner.

Strengthened standards for therapeutic vaping goods 
As part of the rollout of vaping reforms, from July the TGA has implemented strengthened standards for all therapeutic vaping goods for smoking cessation and nicotine dependence. Stricter requirements for ingredients, packaging and labelling are included.

Nicotine replacement therapy aid for the treatment of nicotine vaping dependence 
A faster-acting nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) product (mouth spray) has been approved by the TGA as an aid for the treatment of tobacco and nicotine vaping dependence by relieving nicotine withdrawal symptoms, thereby facilitating cessation in people who smoke and people who vape, who are motivated to quit. It may also be used as part of a reduction strategy as a step towards stopping completely.

Smoking and vaping cessation for patients with seasonal asthma 
For patients with seasonal asthma, smoking and vaping cessation is important. Smoking can worsen respiratory health and trigger symptoms. It is associated with poorer asthma control, reduced lung function, and increased hospitalisations. Vaping may cause airway inflammation and may increase the risk of asthma. 
Helping patients with asthma to quit may reduce asthma exacerbations. The recently updated Australian Asthma Handbook by the National Asthma Council advise that a smoking and vaping history should be taken for all patients, including exposure to environmental tobacco smoke and vaping.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has published regulatory guidance for pharmacies supplying therapeutic vapes. This guidance outlines pharmacists’ regulatory responsibilities when supplying therapeutic vapes to support patients in quitting smoking or managing nicotine dependence.
