Launch of Australia’s First Clinical Tool for Prescribing HIV PEP

Australia’s first clinical tool for prescribing HIV post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) has officially launched.

About the Decision Making in HIV PEP Tool

Developed by ASHM, Australia’s peak organisation for health professionals working in HIV, blood borne viruses (BBVs), and sexual and reproductive health, this new tool is designed to support clinicians in prescribing HIV PEP.

The Decision Making in HIV PEP tool is a concise, easy-to-navigate 2-page document that guides clinicians through assessing HIV risk and determining PEP suitability. It outlines the key steps required before initiating PEP, helping clinicians understand when it is recommended and when it may not be appropriate.

This launch is accompanied by the release of the Fourth Edition of the Australian National Guidelines for Post-Exposure Prophylaxis, which provides the latest evidence-based recommendations to support full adherence and person-centred care.

Key Features of the Guidelines

The updated HIV PEP guidelines are designed to help healthcare practitioners ensure patients feel informed, safe, and actively involved in decisions about their care.

Highlights include:

  • Use of inclusive and culturally safe language during consultations
  • Considerations around affordable options and access to HIV PEP
  • Guidance for GP prescribing of HIV PEP
  • Advice for patients who have missed doses or experienced additional exposures while on PEP
  • Support for shared decision-making to reduce ongoing exposure risks

The Australian National Guidelines for Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) after Non-Occupational and Occupational Exposure to HIV (Fourth Edition) were developed by ASHM and funded by the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing, in consultation with an expert reference group of clinical advisors.
