Local Advocates Share Lived Experience for IDAHOBIT
IDAHOBIT is celebrated globally on 17 May, standing for International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism, and Transphobia.
To mark IDAHOBIT, Adelaide PHN focused on increasing our understanding of supporting and uplifting bisexual individuals, whose experiences are often overlooked or misunderstood, even within queer spaces. Together we aim to foster visibility, understanding and inclusion for all.
One of Adelaide PHN's priorities is that LGBTIQA+ communities can access timely, culturally safe and appropriate primary health care within our region.
On 15 May, Adelaide PHN welcomed Jess, from Thorne Harbour Health and Michael from SAMESH, who shared their lived experiences and professional perspectives.
Jess is a bisexual, cisgender woman who has spent 20 years teaching and researching in gender studies and sociology, particularly health equity and professional practice. She recently changed careers and currently works in the mental health team at Thorne Harbour Health.
Michael is the program manager for SAMESH, a program dedicated to the prevention and destigmatisation of HIV and other BBVs and STIs. Prior to working and living within the LGBTIQA+ community, he was a high school teacher for seven years.
May 17 marks the date in 1990 that homosexuality was removed from the WHO Classification of Diseases. Over three decades later, LGBTIQA+ communities still face discrimination, but every one of us can make a difference.
Adelaide PHN is committed to fostering an inclusive environment where everyone, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, is supported with pride.
Members of LGBTIQA+ communities can be supported by undertaking accreditation or LGBTIQA+ inclusion training to increase your capability in providing safe and appropriate primary care services.
