New Resource Supports Residential Aged Care Providers with Vaccination, Infection Prevention and Outbreak Management

Residential aged care providers play a critical role in protecting residents from serious respiratory illnesses such as COVID-19, influenza, RSV, pneumococcal disease and shingles. To support this important work, the Vaccination, Infection Prevention & Outbreak Management booklet provides practical, evidence-based guidance to help services strengthen vaccination programs, infection prevention practices and outbreak preparedness.

Designed specifically for residential aged care settings, the booklet outlines provider responsibilities, recommended vaccinations, infection prevention and control (IPC) requirements, outbreak response actions, and strategies for delivering effective vaccination programs. It also includes key resources and support pathways available to providers.

Health professionals working in aged care—including nurses, nurse practitioners, GPs, pharmacists and clinical leaders—are encouraged to use this resource as a practical reference tool. It can support informed discussions with residents and families, improve vaccination uptake, strengthen IPC programs and assist services in preparing for and responding to outbreaks.

By bringing together essential information in one place, the booklet helps providers maintain safe, consistent and resident-centred care while reducing the risk of serious illness, hospitalisation and workforce disruption.

For aged care services looking to strengthen their winter readiness and protect vulnerable residents, this booklet is a valuable resource to share across clinical and operational teams.
