New Sexual Health Screening pathway now available
HealthPathways SA (HPSA) has launched a new Sexual Health Screening pathway to support clinicians in delivering evidence‑based, culturally safe sexual health care across South Australia.
This new pathway strengthens an expanding suite of Sexual Health and STI pathways, all adapted to the South Australian health system. The pathways incorporate SA‑specific resources, local referral guidance, and contextualised clinical advice to support decision‑making in primary care. The sexual health pathways were initially developed by the HealthPathways NSW Collaborative in collaboration with ASHM, ensuring alignment with nationally relevant, evidence‑based best practice.
The Sexual Health Screening pathway provides practical guidance on taking a comprehensive sexual health history, selecting appropriate tests, investigating possible pathogens, and managing acute, recurrent, and chronic presentations. It also highlights how risk‑reduction strategies can support prevention and includes access to clinician resources and community‑friendly information.
Importantly, the pathway embeds culturally sensitive and respectful practices, outlines condition‑specific clinical requirements, and provides clear local referral options, supporting clinicians to deliver safe, inclusive, and high‑quality sexual health screening in primary care.
The HealthPathways SA sexual health suite now includes nine pathways:
- Sexual Health Screening
- Chlamydia
- STI Contact Tracing (Partner Notification)
- Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)
- Gonorrhoea
- Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
- Syphilis
- Abnormal Vaginal Discharge
- Vulvovaginal Candidiasis
