PrEP in Practice Pilot Program
HIV prevention in Australia is increasingly being delivered through primary care, with pre‑exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) playing a central role in reducing HIV transmission. To support clinicians in confidently and routinely prescribing PrEP, ASHM has developed the PrEP in Practice Pilot Program—a nationally supported professional development initiative designed specifically for general practitioners (GPs) and nurse practitioners with no or limited experience in PrEP prescribing.
A Structured, Flexible Learning Pathway
The PrEP in Practice Pilot Program is delivered over a three‑month period, allowing participants to complete the program alongside full‑time clinical work. The program combines self‑paced learning with practical and mentored components, recognising the realities of busy general practice while supporting sustainable skill development.
Unlike one‑off training sessions, the program focuses on embedding PrEP prescribing into everyday practice. It is designed to help clinicians move from theoretical knowledge to confident, routine application in real‑world clinical settings.
Who the Program Is For
The pilot is open to GPs and nurse practitioners based in Australia who have little or no prior experience prescribing PrEP. While any GP or nurse practitioner in Australia can prescribe PrEP without special accreditation or mandatory training, this optional program provides additional supported learning, mentoring, and practical tools for those seeking greater confidence and structure.
Places are limited as part of the pilot phase, and enrolments are open until 10 April 2026, or earlier if capacity is reached.
What’s Included in the Program
Participants complete a total time commitment of 12.5 hours, earning 11 CPD hours across a range of program components:
- Introduction to PrEP Prescribing
A self‑paced online module providing foundational knowledge on PrEP sustainability, prescribing, monitoring, and follow‑up, aligned with current national guidelines (1.5 CPD hours). - PrEP Reality Check: Busting Myths & GP Concerns
An on‑demand webinar addressing common misconceptions, practical challenges, and real‑world prescribing questions (1.5 CPD hours). Attendance at a live ASHM PrEP training session may be counted as equivalent. - PrEP Suitability Mini Audit Series
A structured quality improvement activity enabling clinicians to review and strengthen PrEP processes within their own practice, aligned with RACGP quality improvement activities (6 CPD hours). - PrEP Prescribing Mentoring
Tailored mentoring with experienced PrEP prescribers, delivered virtually or face‑to‑face, to support real‑world application, case discussions, and confidence building (up to 2 CPD hours). Optional facilitated linkage to local sexual health services may also be available. - Professional Recognition
Participants may opt in to be listed on ASHM’s National PrEP Prescriber Map, strengthening referral pathways and professional visibility.
Honorarium and Evaluation
To recognise the time required to complete the program, participants receive a $1,000 honorarium upon full completion of all components. This includes mandatory participation in evaluation activities.
The program is being independently evaluated by the Burnet Institute, with participants required to complete two surveys and a short interview. Full participation, including evaluation, is essential for eligibility for payment; partial completion is not eligible for the honorarium.
Why PrEP, Why Now?
PrEP is one of the most effective tools available to prevent HIV transmission and is increasingly prescribed in general practice. By building confidence in PrEP prescribing, clinicians can directly help expand access to HIV prevention, reduce stigma and barriers to care, and support Australia’s goal of eliminating HIV transmission.
The PrEP in Practice Pilot Program is designed to support clinicians who want to feel confident offering PrEP routinely, making HIV prevention a sustainable and integrated part of primary care rather than an isolated clinical skill.
Enrolments are open until 10 April 2026, with a limited number of places available as part of this pilot.
Early enrolment is encouraged to allow enough time to complete mentoring and evaluation activities.
