Flinders Medical Centre are looking for people with a disability who find having a blood test or immunisation difficult.
A research team from the Flinders Medical Centre is wanting your help, to understand how we help people with disabilities have a blood test or immunisation. We understand this sometimes hurts and is scary. We are looking at different ways to help people feel more relaxed, to improve their health.
This might include getting used to the procedure a little bit at a time (desensitisation), or using medication to help people feel relaxed but still awake (procedural sedation). There are different ways we may give the medication, including a mask, a mouthpiece or with a spray up the nose. We have a team who will decide which path is the safest for you.
To be a part of this project, we are looking for people:
- With an intellectual or developmental disability (such as autism)
- 18 years or older
- Have not been able to have a blood test or immunisation
There is no payment for the research, and you may be required to make several visits to the hospital, which may be 3-10 hours in total.
This study has been approved by the Southern Adelaide Clinical Human Research Ethics Committee (approval number 226.23
