Background

About the National Eating Disorders Collaboration

The National Eating Disorders Collaboration is an initiative of the Australian eating disorder sector funded by the Australian Government and dedicated to developing and implementing a nationally consistent, evidence-based system of care for the prevention and treatment of eating disorders.

About Right Care Right Place

The National Eating Disorders Collaboration received grant funding from the Department of Health and Aged Care to work in partnership with four Primary Health Networks to support the co-design, development, and implementation of a regional response to eating disorders using a stepped care approach (the Right Care Right Place project).

Primary Health Networks are funded by the Department of Health and Aged Care to recruit and/or commission Eating Disorder Coordinators, and will partner with the National Eating Disorders Collaboration to map and activate the eating disorder service system with stakeholders to optimise service integration and continuity of care. The project will be evaluated by an independent evaluator, Flinders University.

Right Care Right Place aims to set up Eating Disorder Coordinators in four specific Primary Health Network regions to help people experiencing eating disorders to access effective evidence-based treatment from primary care providers. By working closely with local communities, the project seeks to optimise existing resources, foster partnerships, provide training and support pathways to care. Right Care Right Place will operate from April 2023 to June 2026 and trial Eating Disorder Coordinator roles across four Primary Health Networks: Adelaide, North Western Melbourne, Northern Territory and Western Queensland.

Eating Disorder Coordinator model

Eating Disorder Coordinators with local health systems knowledge will act as a central point of contact for service providers and individuals, their families and supports. They will negotiate treatment and support pathways to ensure Right Care Right Place achieves the objectives and outcomes.

Eating Disorder Coordinators facilitate the connection of various service providers by establishing networks, enabling seamless communication and support. Individuals and families affected by or diagnosed with eating disorders are connected to these established networks, ensuring they receive comprehensive and coordinated care. Eating Disorder Coordinators will act as a connector for service users and service providers.

What is involved?

Participation in Right Care Right Place will involve ongoing contact and communication with your local Eating Disorder Coordinators and PHN, including receiving referrals for patients engaged in Right Care Right Place and links to resources and professional development opportunities. You will also be asked to collect and share data about your engagement with the Right Care Right Place model, including data about yourself and your patients who are enrolled in Right Care Right Place (for patients who have consented to sharing this information). This data will be shared with the Flinders University team, who are coordinating and implementing an independent evaluation of the Right Care Right Place model. The evaluation is being run by Prof Tracey Wade (tracey.wade@flinders.edu.au) and Dr Madelaine de Valle (madelaine.devalle@flinders.edu.au – main contact person) of Flinders University. The study has been approved by Flinders University’s Human Research Ethics Committee (Project ID 6785).
