Safe Haven: A Peer-Led, After-Hours Mental Health Alternative in Salisbury

Safe Haven provides an immediate, person-centred response for individuals experiencing emotional distress—offering a calm, non-clinical environment as an alternative to the Emergency Department.

Located at 9 John Street, Salisbury, Safe Haven operates Tuesday to Friday, 5–9 pm (including public holidays), filling a critical gap for those who may not meet the threshold for acute mental health services but still require urgent support.

Why It Matters for Health Professionals

Emergency departments can be overwhelming for people in distress, and clinical interventions aren’t always the most appropriate first step. Safe Haven offers a step-up/step-down option, providing short-term de-escalation and linking guests to community, health, and social services as needed. This makes it a valuable resource for GPs, mental health clinicians, hospital staff, and community providers seeking an immediate, accessible alternative for patients.

Peer-Driven Support

The service is delivered by Peer Practitioners—individuals with lived experience of mental health challenges—who offer genuine, non-judgemental support grounded in empathy and hope. Guests can choose the type of support that suits them, whether that’s a quiet conversation, a calm space, or engaging in an activity.

Access and Referral

  • No referral or appointment required—walk-ins welcome
  • Free, confidential support for anyone aged 16+
