Supporting Our Elders: Insights from the Elder Care Support State Yarning Circle 2024

Adelaide PHN was honoured to attend the Elder Care Support State Yarning Circle 2024, facilitated by the Aboriginal Health Council of SA (AHCSA) and the South Australian West Coast ACCHO Network (SAWCAN). This event was an invaluable opportunity to connect with key stakeholders, hear their stories, and learn more about supporting our Elders and older Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
The collaboration between the Aboriginal Health Council of South Australia (AHCSA) and the South Australian West Coast ACCHO Network (SAWCAN) exemplifies a shared commitment to the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal communities. As the peak body representing Aboriginal community-controlled health services in South Australia, AHCSA advocates for improved health outcomes and the rights of Aboriginal people. Similarly, SAWCAN, a network of Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs), provides comprehensive primary health care to approximately 5,500 Aboriginal people. SAWCAN’s focus on early intervention and holistic wellbeing aims to build strong foundations for Aboriginal children, families, and communities, fostering a healthier future for all.
The Yarning Circle offered an introduction to the Elder Care Support Program, designed to guide Elders through the aged care system. This initiative focuses on identifying the level of care and services needed to support healthy aging and a sense of belonging for our Elders.
Engaging with Elder Care Support Connectors and Coordinators gave us a deeper understanding of the needs within the region and reinforced our commitment to supporting older community members in the Adelaide PHN area. We look forward to continuing our work towards building a healthier, more equitable future for all.
