Training program for GPs to diagnose and treat ADHD
The State Government in partnership with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP), has announced a new training program that will enable up to 100 South Australian GPs to diagnose and treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) from February 2026.
Expressions of interest are now open for the new South Australian GP ADHD training program, which will be a mandatory component of the authority required to diagnose, treat, and prescribe for ADHD.
Training program
Led by the RACGP and developed in collaboration with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians SA (RACP SA) and the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists SA (RANZCP SA), the training program includes:
• two online self-paced modules (approximately 3 hours via GP Learning) endorsed by AADPA – to be completed by the end of 2025
• a one-day (in person) ADHD workshop on Friday 27 February 2026 at an Adelaide CBD location
• six bi-monthly online Peer Group Learning (PGL) sessions (60 minutes each, delivered in the evening).
After completing the training workshop in February 2026, participating GPs will be able to begin to diagnose ADHD, prescribe medication, and provide ongoing care to patients over 8 years of age, without the need for referral to a psychiatrist or paediatrician, where clinically appropriate.
Training time will be supported with a $2,000 payment per participant and rural and remote GPs will be eligible to apply for a travel stipend to attend the in-person workshop.
Eligibility requirements
To be eligible for this training program, GPs should meet the following criteria:
• have the ability to complete the RACGP online education models no later than the end of 2025
• have the ability to attend the full day workshop in person in Adelaide on Friday 27 February 2026
• have the ability to complete the six online peer group learning sessions delivered across different weekday evenings from March to November 2026
• be registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) as a Specialist General Practitioner
• have no conditions against their Ahpra registration
• be currently practicing in South Australia.
Application process
Express your interest by completing the RACGP form before Sunday 16 November 2025.
The selection process will be managed by RACGP SA, with support from RACP SA and RANZCP SA. Applications will be reviewed with priority given to eligible applicants from a broad geographical spread across South Australia and areas of greatest need.
