Training to Boost Dietitians' Skills in Eating Disorder Care
On 23 July, Adelaide PHN hosted a free, training workshop that brought together 60 dietitians and dietetics students from across the Adelaide PHN region to enhance their skills in identifying and responding to eating disorders, disordered eating, and body image distress.
The workshop was delivered as part of the Right Care Right Place: Eating Disorder Care in My Community project, a collaboration between Adelaide PHN and the National Eating Disorder Collaboration that aims to build local capacity to support community members experiencing eating disorders, disordered eating, and body image distress.
Facilitated by Yasmina Diab, Accredited Practicing Dietitian and Credentialed Eating Disorder Clinician from Elevare Nutrition Group and Adelaide Women's Healthcare Collaborative, it provided practical tools that participants could immediately implement in their dietetic practice.
With an estimated 50,000 people in the Adelaide PHN region living with eating disorders - yet only 25% seeking treatment - this training helped address a critical gap in the primary healthcare system.
With their expertise in nutrition and eating behaviours, dietitians bring valuable skills to eating disorder care.
When community members with eating disorders receive care from a skilled multidisciplinary team that includes a dietitian, their quality of life can be greatly improved and their physical risk significantly reduced.
