Compassion in Healthcare: Barriers and Misconceptions

Smiling portrait of a woman within a group meeting

The Matilda Centre for Research in Mental Health and Substance Use at the University of Sydney has been funded by the Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing, to develop a series of on-demand webinars on evidence-based practice. The webinars are freely available and focus on building capacity in relation to evidence-based practice approaches to the management and treatment of co-occurring alcohol and other drug (AOD) and mental health conditions.

This webinar will give an overview of compassion in healthcare and is part of the University of Sydney’s Matilda Centre for Research in Mental Health and Substance Use Comorbidity Project webinar series, which is focused on applying evidence into practice.

It will be presented by Dr Erin Kelly, a Clinical Psychologist in private practice and a casual academic at the Matilda Centre for Research in Mental Health and Substance Use. She has over 15 years' clinical experience and 20 years in research, focusing on the treatment and prevention of co-occurring substance use and mental health conditions.

By the end of this webinar, attendees will be able to:

  • Outline what compassion is and why it matters for both healthcare professionals and those in their care
  • Recognise common barriers to compassion and consider how these may show up in their own work
  • Reflect on ways they could strengthen compassionate practices in their work and life
