Primary care practitioners in SA can help to improve the health outcomes of people living with hepatitis C and reduce a patient’s risk of developing advanced liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma through early diagnosis, thorough evaluation of liver disease severity, appropriate management of co-morbidities, pre-treatment assessment and initiation of DAA therapy.
Learning Outcomes
- Identify priority populations for hepatitis C testing
- Interpret test results and diagnose hepatitis C appropriately
- Assess for liver fibrosis and other co-morbidities
- Explain which patients can be managed in primary care and those requiring specialist referral
- Initiate treatment, monitor and follow-up according to the recommended guidelines
