Learning outcomes

  • Discuss the importance of correct dosing in atrial fibrillation treatment, especially in elderly geriatric patients with or without renal impairment.
  • Describe the impact of risk factors and comorbidities such as age and renal impairment on the management of atrial fibrillation for elderly patients.
  • Apply current guidelines and supporting evidence regarding the treatment of high-risk nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) elderly patients.
  • Recognise the importance of opportunistic screening for atrial fibrillation (AF) in the clinic or community.
  • Discuss how to classify elective surgical interventions according to bleeding risk and when to discontinue and restart anticoagulation.
