Schizophrenia distorts reality. Its potentially devastating impact, however, is all too real. This serious mental disorder impacts a person's thoughts, perceptions, emotions, and behaviour. This has wide ranging and sometimes calamitous consequences not only for the individual, but their family and the broader community as well.
Because of its varying manifestations, general practitioners - as true generalists in care - supported by a multidisciplinary team, can be best placed to diagnose, treat, and support the person living with schizophrenia.
Learning outcomes
- Evaluate the presentation and impacts of schizophrenia to make a timely and accurate diagnosis.
- Develop a patient-centred approach to schizophrenia management that effectively utilises the multidisciplinary team.
- Apply evidence-based principles in the use of antipsychotic medications including dopamine partial agonists.
- Coordinate ongoing care and review for patients with schizophrenia, involving family and carers where appropriate
